Chapter 2 of Gatsby seemed like a very normal chapter, with a bunch of rich elites getting drunk and telling their stories. However, if you dug deeper, there were many sexual references. The chapter begins with the description of a valley, and upon closer inspection, it is made clear that this is a metaphor for the female genitalia. In the chapter, we meet Mrs. Wilson, Tom's mistress. Tom buys her a puppy, which seems like a demonstration of the power he has over her, rather than a demonstration of his love or even desire for her. Tom's need for power is also demonstrated when he punches his mistress over his actual wife, Daisy. We also meet Catherine, who seems to be interested in Nick, and Mr. Mckee, who also seems to be interested in Nick. We also see homosexual tendencies in chapter two, as Nick describes the men in a much more sexual manner than the women. Then, there is a lot of ambiguity in the way the chapter ends. Nick is standing over an almost naked Mr. Mckee, and that is all we know. This leaves me with many questions. Were they just taking pictures? If so, why isn't Mr. Mckee the one standing over Nick, why is it the other way around?
